About four years ago, Marvin and Lorraine Veto decided they wanted to make a lifestyle change. They’d grown tired of looking after their house and wanted to simplify their lives. More importantly, the couple wanted a place where they could connect with people who were their own age and shared similar interests.
After looking at several retirement communities, the Vetos found what they were searching for at Countryside Village Retirement Community. “We know more people here than we did in our old neighborhood,” said Marvin. “This place is not a business. It’s a family.”
Both 91 years old, Marvin and Lorraine have been married for 69 years. The couple moved from Kernersville to the two-bedroom, two-bath home that sits at the end of the resort-like complex and have settled into an active and comfortable lifestyle.
“We were happy where we were but it was time for a place like this,” added Lorraine. “Our kids came and looked at it and they loved it.”
At least once a year, the couple manages to get most of their family, which consists of four children, seven grandchildren, spouses and two great grandchildren, together in their home. The large sunroom that’s surrounded by the tranquility of undeveloped woods is a popular gathering spot for the clan.
When their family’s not around, Marvin and Lorraine enjoy getting together with other residents and participating in the various activities that take place daily. “They keep us busy all the time and we really like that,” said Lorraine with a smile.
The couple mentioned Wii bowling, a kazoo group, monthly dinners out and a fall trip to the mountains as examples of what’s available. They agree that they like the exercise program best. “We really appreciate the exercise program,” said Marvin. “That’s very important to us. If we weren’t doing that three days a week, we’d probably be sitting in wheelchairs.”
Like a lot of people who opt to move to an independent facility, the Vetos decided to make a change partly due to the headache of keeping up a house. “We found it was getting harder and harder for us to maintain,” said Marvin. He noted that Countryside takes care of all that upkeep – both inside and outside. There’s no need to track down and deal with repairmen. Housekeepers come in twice a month. There are no property taxes and no home insurance. Renters insurance is all that’s needed.
“We’re very happy here and we would recommend this place to anyone,” concluded Marvin.
